​Who We Are

The Mount Horeb Landmarks Foundation, Inc. is an all volunteer  501(C)(3)organization which has been instrumental in the ongoing restoration of the District #1 Schoolhouse at 110 N. 2nd Street, Mount Horeb, WI.  The building is the oldest school building in the village and has been designated by the village board as a local historic landmark. 

Mount Horeb Landmarks Foundation, Inc. was formed in 2002 in response to the pending demolition of the District #1 School building.  

The bylaws of the corporation call for the organization to be overseen by a board of directors with three year terms. The present board members are:

The District #1 School:

Provides an interesting place for community gatherings, concerts, workshops, meetings, exhibits, festivals and classes
Provides a warm and inviting place for people to host their own events, i.e. weddings, social  gatherings, reunions, and local club events or meetings
Is a venue for field trips for students to experience a day in the 1889 District #1 classroom, with text books and lesson plans from the turn of the century 
Invokes interest in the Mount Horeb community and its history and architecture
Fosters civic pride and protects the community’s heritage
Helps make downtown distinctive and original, making it a welcoming place for tourists and residents
